Strawberries and Sour Cream - My Family Recipe

Yep, you read correctly. Strawberries and sour cream. It sounds like an awful combination. But it has been a favorite in my family for years. If you give it a chance, you'll enjoy the sweet creamy flavor that my family so loves.

My grandmother was born and raised in France. After meeting my grandfather and having my dad, she immigrated to the USA. Although she left her homeland, she always kept some of her "Frenchness." Her accent was one thing that never left. My siblings and I used to giggle when she would say "tree" instead of "three."

Growing up, she made us many French inspired meals. I used to love her Cream of Asparagus Soup, Cauliflower with Cheese Sauce, and Artichokes. But everyone's favorite recipe was Strawberries with Sour Cream.

Every summer my dad would request this recipe and said it brought back childhood memories. In keeping with this tradition, I make a bowlful every year and enjoy my own sweet childhood memories.

Recipe for Strawberries and Sour Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1 Quart of Strawberries

  • 16 Ounces of Sour Cream

  • 1/4 - 1/2 Cup of Sugar

Directions:

  1. Rinse your strawberries and leave them dry.

  2. Slice strawberries and place a single layer in a medium sized bowl.

  3. Cover the strawberry layer with 1-2 tablespoons of sugar (depending on how sweet you prefer).

  4. Cover the strawberries and sugar with a layer of sour cream.

  5. Continue to alternate layers until the bowl is full.

  6. Place your strawberries and sour cream into the refrigerator and allow to sit for a minimum of 4 hours.

  7. Remove from fridge and stir mixture until the ingredients are well combined.

  8. Serve cold and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • I prefer a more tart flavor and usually add about a Tablespoon of sugar to each strawberry layer. You can always add more sugar once you've mixed everything together if you feel it isn't sweet enough. Sweetness can vary depending on the strawberries.

  • Letting the mixture sit for a few hours allows the sugar to help cut some of the tartness from the strawberries and helps to blend the flavors together.

  • If you have too much cream and have eaten most of the the strawberries you can always slice a few more and add them to the mixture.

  • Although you can make this recipe with store-bought strawberries, I would recommend making it with fresh local berries. You really can taste the difference!
