My Favorite Gardening Resources
Gardening can be intimidating. Especially if you're a newbie. Even seasoned gardeners need inspiration and help sometimes. Today I'm sharing some of my favorite gardening resources.
The Beginner's Garden Podcast by Jill McSheehy - Jill is based in the southern United States and offers great advice for beginner and experienced gardeners alike. I've been following Jill for several years. It's been fun to watch her grow and share knowledge with listeners. You will find a wide range of topics in the podcasts from soil amendment, to seed saving, and everything in between.
Floret Cut Flower by Erin Benzakein and Julie Chai - Floret is a flower farm based in Washington State. If you're looking to break into the world of cutting flowers, this is the book for you! Not only are the photos in this book stunning, but it also offers practical advice on how to grow cutting flowers. If you don't already follow Erin on Instagram, do it! She posts inspirational photos of her specialty flower verities that you won't want to miss!
The Prairie Homestead - Jill Winger is absolutely fabulous and offers hundreds of resources between her blog, cook book, YouTube channel, and podcast. Jill doesn't waste time with fluff which is one of the reasons I love her. She is to the point and doesn't mind questioning systems to find the best outcomes. Although I am a podcast junkie, I love Jill's blog and have learned a lot of skills from her website. If you aren't familiar with Jill, you should definitely get to know her!
Herbal Tea Gardens: 22 Plans for your Enjoyment & Well-being by Marietta Marshall Marcin - I can't remember where I picked up this book, but I'm certainly glad I have it in my collection. If you're interested in growing herbs (particularly herbs for teas) this is the book for you! This book outlines a different herb on each page telling where it comes from, how to care for it, and how to use it. Herbs are wonderful plants! I absolutely love mine and use them in my home all the time!
Melissa K. Norris - Melissa is from Washington State and is a true old-fashioned homesteader. Melissa has hundreds of resources available through her blog, podcast, YouTube channel, and books. Melissa's goal is to help people all over the world learn to garden and bring back traditional skills. Melissa's Pioneering Today Podcast is what started my love affair with homesteading. I especially enjoyed her episode on plant propagation which you can check out here.
Welcome to the Farm: How-To Wisdom from the Elliott Homestead by Shaye Elliott - Shaye is a homesteader from Washington who helps her followers embrace a seasonal lifestyle. She is author of several books and the Elliott Homestead Blog. Welcome to the Farm is a beginner's homesteading guide. The first two chapters of this book are all about growing crops and preserving your harvest. This book goes into detail on a host of other homestead related topics, but I think the gardening chapter is a great place to start if you're looking to learn the basics. Shaye also has a lovely Instagram account which you should check out when you have the chance! Shaye is the one who inspired me to photograph my life on the farm.
Now that I've give you my favorite resources for gardening, I encourage you to get outside and start gardening! It's one thing to read about it, but you truly cannot substitute hands-on learning. If you're not already addicted, you will be soon!
Happy gardening,
Abby
