DIY Autumn Flower Arrangements with Step-by-Step Instructions

I hope you're enjoying the beautiful autumn season. I was inspired this past weekend to create some fall arrangements with flowers and produce that reflected the season. I had a lot of fun and decided I would share my arrangements with you. As I share how I created these center pieces I hope you'll find inspiration to create your own and enjoy the beautiful gifts around us.

Cabbage Patch Arrangement -

  • 1 Cabbage

  • 11 Roses in various stages

  • 5 Sprigs of Basil

  • 5 Sprigs of Pineapple Mint

  • Toothpicks

  • Small glass or plastic container

  • Floral wire

I had seen some cabbage arrangements on Pinterest and decided that I had to try it. Luckily, I had some small cabbages left from this summer. I love that this arrangement gives a nod towards seasonal vegetables and the beauty they hold.

1. Start by hollowing out your cabbage and placing a small glass or plastic container inside the cabbage. I used a small glass yogurt container. Larger cabbages might hold water better but I found that mine leaked without having something to hold the water.

2. Cut and harvest your flowers and herbs of choice. I used Roses as the main flower in this arrangement but you can certainly use whatever you have!

3. Place the roses (or flower of choice) in a pleasing manor while holding them in your hand. I recommend using odd numbers.

4. Add in the Basil and Pineapple Mint (or herbs of choice). Space them throughout the arrangement.

5. Using the floral wire, carefully wrap the stems together so that the bunch of flowers and herbs stays together.

6. Place the bouquet into the cabbage and use toothpicks to help stabilize any flowers as needed.

7. Add water and place on display.

(Please note that this arrangement would benefit from refrigeration overnight and is perishable).

Herb and Snapdragon Centerpiece -

  • 3 Sprigs of Lamb's Ear

  • 3 Bunches of Thyme

  • 5 Snap Dragons

  • A handful of Oregano

What makes this centerpiece so unique is the use of a gravy boat as the vase. I love when people find uses for things other than the original indented purpose. It makes things interesting!

  1. Cut the herbs and flowers of choice. Remove any dead or broken leaves/petals. I recommend using a solid color flower and varying the texture and colors of the herbs but by all means, play around with what you like!

  2. Place the Thyme in the bottom of the gravy boat with sprigs pointing upwards.

  3. Add the Lamb's ear to fill the gravy boat.

  4. Next add Oregano sprigs throughout the centerpiece.

  5. Finally, add your pop of color. I chose to use Snapdragons in the centerpiece pictured above. Remember to add water if you choose to add herbs and flowers to the saucer.

Eucalyptus and Yarrow Bunch

  • 7 Stems of Eucalyptus

  • 5 Yarrow flowers

  • 1 Bunch of Yarrow leaves

  • 5 Dried Coneflower (Echinacea) stems with top seeds removed

Adding dried flowers to this simple bunch gave it a fall vibe that I am obsessed with. I hope you like it too!

  1. Harvest or purchase Eucalyptus and flowers of choice. Remove leaves from bottoms of stems and trim to length.

  2. Fill a jar with water. I found the jar pictured above at a yard sale and love the way it adds a little extra visual interest.

  3. Place the Eucalyptus stems into the jar spaced as desired.

  4. Next add the Yarrow flowers and leaves.

  5. Remove the seeds from the top part of the dried Coneflower (Echinacea) to expose the pointed cone shape. Place throughout bouquet as desired.

Vegetable Beauty -

  • 1 Head of Broccoli

  • 5 Gourds of various shapes, sizes, and colors

  • 3 Sprigs of Flat Leaf Parsley

  • 5 Dried Coneflower (Echinacea) stems

  • 1 Flowerpot with plastic insert

  • Toothpicks

I was inspired to use vegetables for this arrangement to highlight the beauty found in humble and common things.

  1. Clean a flowerpot and place a plastic insert or jar inside to hold water.

  2. Separate broccoli into several large pieces. Place the largest piece in the center of the flowerpot and spread the others around the edge of the flowerpot.

  3. Add gourds between broccoli and along the edge of the flowerpot. Use toothpicks if needed to hold the broccoli and gourds in place

  4. Add several sprigs of Parsley throughout the arrangement.

  5. Add the dried Coneflower (Echinacea) stems and you're good to go!

(This arrangement would also benefit from refrigeration overnight. Feel free to set it out in the morning when you're around the house to enjoy it).

Radiant Red Beets

  • 1 Red Beet, thinly sliced

  • 3 Zinnias (I like red or dark pink to match the color of the beets)

  • 1 Bunch of Oregano

The simplicity of this arrangement makes it easy to throw together for a quick gift or easy centerpiece for a last-minute party.

  1. Wash and thinly slice a red beet.

  2. In a jar filled with water gently place the sliced red beet along the sides of the jar. You may need to use a fork or chopstick to help with this.

  3. Once the red beet slices are in place, carefully add the Zinnias to the bouquet.

  4. Finish out the bouquet with fresh sprigs of Oregano.

Pretty Little Pumpkin -

  • 1 Small to medium sized pumpkin with top and insides removed

  • 1 plastic container or jar

  • 10(ish) Zinnias

  • 5 Stems of Pineapple Sage

  • 3 Succulents (optional)

  • Toothpicks

I love the classic fall look that the pumpkin brings to this arrangement.

  1. Wash your pumpkin then remove the top and insides. Place a jar or plastic container inside the pumpkin.

  2. Cut and prep flowers, herbs, and succulents for the arrangement.

  3. Place the Zinnias into the pumpkin then add stems of Pineapple Sage throughout the Zinnias.

  4. Use a toothpick to pierce the bottom of the succulents and add them to the arrangement.

  5. Use additional toothpicks to help stabilize the arrangement and hold the succulents in place.

(Remember the pumpkin will breakdown over time so keep a close eye on it to make sure you don't end up with a mess on your table).

I hope you enjoyed this post and are inspired to create your own beauty out of the seasonal things around you.
