December on the Farm

Welcome to the Farm

December was a very exciting month filled with holiday parties, cookies, and time with friends and family. December always has a way of making us feel incredibly blessed.

What I’ve been up to:

In between time at work and household chores, I've been crafting, wrapping presents, and baking goodies in the kitchen. I love the cozy feeling that December brings. It makes me want to curl up with a project or good book.

December brings along many family traditions. Every year the women in my family get together and bake loads of cookies. It's a wonderful time laughing and catching up with each other. Later, the men join us for our traditional spaghetti dinner and snitch their favorite cookies. After dinner, everyone packs up and the cookies are sent home to enjoy throughout the season. My great-grandmother started the tradition and we continue to carry it on even though she is no longer with us.

Most of the garden is now asleep. I must confess I didn't get all of the trimming done this year... Oh well, hopefully the birds will enjoy the seeds and dried leaves. I do have a few baby Kale and lettuce plants in the greenhouse. I am hoping to use them in a salad soon.

What Caleb has been up to:

Caleb has been getting in touch with his creative side this season. He put up the tree, strung the lights, and decorated most of our living room for the season. I must say, I was really impressed with his work! He also shot several of the photos in this post.

Caleb has been working hard around the farm feeding the woodstove, loading firewood, trimming brush, and working on handmade gifts. I really don't know what I would do without him!

What Tucker has been up to:

Tucker is not a Christmas kind of guy. He wasn’t thrilled when I wrapped him in lights for a photo. He also wasn’t a fan of his Christmas bow or sweater. He did however enjoy the holiday cookie crumbles that made their way to the floor.

Other news on the farm:

One of the most exciting things that happened was the addition of 3 feeder pigs to our farm. We're excited to introduce Kimber, Henry, and Weatherby (bonus points if you can figure out the inspiration behind the names). We brought them home a few weeks ago and they are enjoying life on the farm. They love rooting through straw, eating kitchen scraps, and taking naps. Unfortunately, they've found a weak spot in their pen and can root out stones from the barn foundation. Caleb and I didn't see that coming. We're now brainstorming on how to break the bad habit.

This is the last post in the "On the Farm" series that we started in January 2021. It's crazy to think a whole year has gone by! We hope you've enjoyed seeing month to month updates of life in the hollow!

Thanks for reading,

Caleb, Abby, and the rest of the gang
