Bringing Spring Into Your Home

For the month of April, we are focusing on the theme: Refresh, Renew, and Repair. What better way to refresh your home than to embrace springtime? Today I'd like to dive into practical tips for making your home a springtime haven.

Why Bother?

Welcoming spring into our homes is more than celebrating flowers and warmer temperatures. It helps us to live mindfully. Seasonal living is something that has a special place in my heart. It helps to keep me connected to nature's ebbs and flows. It makes me stop and notice the little things around me. And it fills my hearts with gratitude for what I have here and now.

How?

When incorporating spring into my home, I like to focus on the 5 senses. I ask myself how I can bring the sights, smells, and tastes of springtime inside my four walls. Below I'm sharing some of my favorite ways to bring spring to my home.

1. Sight -

I don't like decorating for holidays. It feels too pressured and overwhelming. Instead, I like to decorate for the seasons. When decorating for spring I like to look for inspiration in the world around me. Flowers are popping up in beautiful yellows, whites, greens, and purples. These are the colors I try to incorporate into my décor. I also like to add terracotta, old watering cans, and seed packets as these items give a nod to the planting and new growth that spring brings.

2. Sound -

In spring I enjoy listening to Celtic music. It reminds me of the green hills of Ireland and I find the feelings it evokes synonymous with springtime. Listening to Antonio Vivaldi's Spring also brings me the warm fuzzy feelings. You can check it out here.

If you're looking for a book fit for springtime, check out Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson. The story of Hattie Big Sky is based on the author's grandmother's time as a homesteader in Montana. Journeying with Hattie to Montana and reading her story of hard work, determination, and friendship is perfect to get you motivated to tackle spring projects. You can certainly read this book but you can also find audio versions which I highly recommend.

3. Touch -

Touch provides a unique and important aspect to our senses; One that we often overlook. Think about softy downy chicks, smooth new grass blades, and paper-thin flower petals. Incorporating textures into your home could include trading out heavy curtains for light airy ones. Try adding light table cloths, pastel or floral napkins, and bits of nature to your table to give it that springtime pop.

4. Smell -

Rain on freshly tilled ground, delicate floral scents, and citrusy cleaning soaps come to my mind. Open all the windows. Get the stale winter air out and make room for spring's warm breezes and refreshing rains. Trade in the heavy spices of winter for lilac and lemon.

5. Taste -

Spinach, radishes, chives, asparagus, peas, and rhubarb are all in season during spring. Have these veggies make their way onto your table and enjoy their fresh flavor. Bonus points if you grow your own or purchase them from a farmer's market.

Here on the farm, with the days getting longer, the hens are giving us more eggs. We've been enjoying omelets and frittatas stuffed with asparagus, spinach, and other veggies. If you're looking for more springtime meal inspiration you can check that out here.

I hope you're enjoying the change of season and are inspired to embrace a seasonal life. Leave a comment letting me know how you like to incorporate spring into your home.

Abby
