Beautiful Pies
Before we dive into today's topic, I want to thank those of you who submitted feedback about what you enjoy seeing in Home in the Hollow blog posts. I took the month of January off as a time to reflect and prioritize my goals for 2023. Caleb and I are taking on some new responsibilities in 2023 so I will only be publishing blog posts twice a month instead of weekly. Thanks for all of your support and for faithfully reading Home in the Hollow. I'm excited to see where this next year takes us. Now let's get to the blog post!
I am learning to enjoy winter. It hasn't always been my favorite, but I am starting to see the benefit of a slow season. One thing I really enjoy doing during winter is baking. While on Pinterest, I stumbled across "Pie Art." And, of course, I had to give it a try!
I spent the afternoon making two pies; one sweet and one savory. The sweet pie was a mixed berry pie which used a mix of frozen raspberries (black and red), black berries, and blueberries that I had left in my freezer. The savory pie was actually more of a quiche filled with leeks, kale, sausage, and eggs.
I decided to make the berry pie into a night time scene depicting a forest and midnight sky with stars and the moon. I used cookie cutters for the trees and stars to help get the perfect shape. This was my first attempt at "pie art" and I was pretty pleased with how it turned out.
For the savory pie I attempted to make a "garden inspired pie" complete with twisted lattice and roses. This pie crust took a bit longer than the first one, but it was so much fun! I especially loved making the leaves for the roses.
To create this look, I used a sharp paring knife to slice thin strands for the lattice. I twisted half of the strands and wove them with the untwisted strands. Next I cut out leaf shapes and used the knife to draw veins. Finally, I cut approximately 3/4 inch strips and rolled them up like mini cinnamon rolls. I crimped the bottoms of the rolls and separated the top layers to create a rose petal look. I think the pie would probably look prettier if I had used a fruit filling instead of the bright yellow egg color. But that's okay - it still tastes yummy!
I hope today's blog post inspires you to try your own "pie art." If you decide to make a pie I would love to see your photos! Feel free to send them to athomeinthehollow@gmail.com.
Thanks for reading,
Abby
