Bathroom Renovation
It's been a while since I've shared any home renovation posts. So, today I am going to share the bathroom renovation we did before moving into the farm house.
Let me start by saying when we bought our house it reeked of stale cigarettes and pet urine. (**DISCLAIMER: Don't read the next few sentences if you're squeamish). The walls of the house were gray with smoke. And there was literally a pool of pee that took days to dry even after we removed the carpet. I promise I'm not making this up! I'll have to share that story another day...
Anyway, the bathroom was no exception. First thing I noticed when I walked through the short hallway into the bathroom, was the sained floral wallpaper. Next I noticed the water marks in the toilet and soap scummy shower/tub. The drains were filled with hair from both the previous owners and pets. The floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. On the upside, there was a large closet and the bathroom itself was very spacious. Definitely something to work with.
We were on a budget with this room and tried to save as much as we could without skimping on the important things. We decided to keep the vanity, the shower, and toilet. But believe me it took a LOT of cleaning. Thankfully, we had good support and family members graciously helped me scrub everything from top to bottom.
Caleb got the unfortunate task of removing the wallpaper. He sprayed it down with warm water and removed it piece by piece. Then we had to scrape off the leftover glue and grime from the walls. Needless to say, Caleb is not a fan of wallpaper and has told me he would prefer to never again see wallpaper in our house.
Next came a fresh coat of paint for the walls and the trim. We decided to keep the original flooring to save on cost. Although it wasn't my favorite, the floor has grown on me. My grandmother helped me wax and polish it. There are still a few nicks and scuffs, but it gets the job done. At some point we'll probably end up replacing the flooring, but for now I kind of like the "conservatory" style look the green and white checks create.
Caleb put in a new faucet and light fixture above the vanity. He also built an oak frame for our new mirror. Although I wanted new hardware for the vanity, a new vent for the ceiling, and new outlet covers, I decided to try a DIY project and keep the old ones. I purchased a oil rubbed bronze paint and sprayed the knobs/handles, ceiling vent, and outlet covers. It worked really well and I don't think you can tell they were once a gold metallic color.
Our bathroom is far from perfect, but I think this project goes to show you don't have to have everything just perfect to create a lovely room. We totally worked with what we could afford and made the best of what we had.
I have to admit it's a little weird taking a photo of your toilet and sharing it with the world. But hopefully you enjoyed seeing our bathroom renovation. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
