5 Ways To Give Encouragement During Dark Days
Life can hit hard. This past year in particular, seemed to sucker punch, then proceed to give me a flying roundhouse to the face. But during those difficult days, I was encouraged by the creative thoughtfulness of others. It got me thinking: what could I do to help others in need of some sunshine?
Drop Off Flowers -
I've heard it said that flowers are food for the soul. I couldn't agree more. I absolutely love getting flowers. Every time I look at them, the bright blooms remind me that I am loved. Giving flowers to a friend, loved one, or even a stranger can greatly help to lift their spirits. It doesn't need to be expensive. Some wild flowers, greens, or even weeds tied with a small piece of ribbon can offer their lovely charm.
Pick Up the Phone -
Although we live in the age of technology, sometimes I feel less connected. It's so easy to send a text or email instead of placing a call. But the familiarity of a friendly voice can be much more impactful. For me, it takes time and intentionality for a phone conversation. It's not always easy, but it's usually worth the effort. Hearing the voice of a great aunt or little nephew is not only exciting for them, but can also be fun for us too. I'm sure that someday we'll miss the stories they shared over the telephone wire.
Make a Meal -
During a particularly difficult time, a sweet friend mailed me a menu for her "restaurant". I opened the letter from her, and inside was a paper with two categories: main dishes and sides. The list included things like grilled salmon, baked chicken, asparagus, cheesy potatoes, Cesar salad... you get the gist. I was to pick one main dish, two side dishes, and a date for her to deliver them. I felt so spoiled! Not only was I free from the pressure of making dinner, I also got to pick from a large selection of delicious options. She delivered the meal later that week with a smile. My dear friend went above and beyond to make me feel cared for. It was such a special experience and I will always remember her kindness.
Send Snail Mail -
There's nothing like getting a handwritten letter. You just can't beat it. These days, with everyone on quarantine, snail mail can be a great way to let someone know you are thinking of them. Bonus points if you make your own card or add some stickers. I keep thinking about our many older people stuck in nursing homes right now. I know writing to them would mean the world.
Put Together a Care Package -
My co-workers recently surprised me with a care package. Spilling out of a lovely basket, were things that reminded them of me. They included magazines, books, tea, candy, socks, and lots of other goodies. The kind gesture made tears come to my eyes. I loved how each of them was so thoughtful in choosing items they knew I would appreciate. It is so wonderful to know that people care about you.
Many of these ideas are not hard, they just take some forethought and a little time. This year, I am encouraging myself to look beyond my own difficulties and reach into the world of another. I hope you will join me in this challenge.
Let me know what encourages you most in the comments.
